What is hemp?

Transformation of hemp fibers into textiles
Ahmed, master weaver, specialist in the transformation of hemp fibers into textiles, Tangier

When Mohamed, in his small workshop in Tangier, settles in front of his loom, he does it in the manner of a player of harp. In a few moments, the man and the instrument will become one; and the movement, though painful, will become almost spontaneous, like breathing.
And Mohamed begins to weave, as his father did, as his ancestors did.
He will gladly suspend his movement to sip his glass of mint tea or to simply welcome you.
If you show a little curiosity, you will surely have the opportunity to listen to his story, that of his job and especially of that Andalusian heritage, that he constantly reproduces identically, using the same instruments, the same patterns and a raw material as old as humanity: the hemp.

What is hemp?[1]

Hemp is a plant known under two varieties: industrial hemp, Cannabis sativa L., produced for the seed (hempseed) and fiber (tow, hemp); and Cannabinus sativa indica, commonly known as marijuana or Indian hemp, known for its psychotropic substances.

What characterizes industrial hemp?

  • Hemp is an extremely resistant fiber: in addition to its use in the manufacture of clothes, ropes and paper, it is increasingly used in the manufacture of building materials.
  • The hemp plant does without fungicides, herbicides and pesticides. In addition, hemp cultivation requires 1/3 of land and 1/20 of water, comparaed to cotton cultivation. Finally, the fabric is biodegradable. These qualities, associated respectively with the beginning and end of life of hemp, give it its ecological character, which makes it a popular fabric today and explains its renewal.
  • Hemp is also known for its absorbent (able to absorbe up to 30% of humidity) and antiseptic properties (prevents the growth of bacteria, fungi and mites). It is antistatic, which means it does not attract dirt.
