The Kasbah Museum of Tangier

The Kasbah Museum (القصبة) of Mediterranean cultures, rehabilitated since 2016 by the National Museums Foundation, is one of the most memorable Museums in the city of Tangier, testifying to the richness and diversity of the Mediterranean basin.

The Museum is located on the eastern part of the Tangier Kasbah and occupies what historically represented the "Sultan's Palace" (in Arabic "Dar Al Makhzen"). The site near the palace would have been successively occupied by the Carthaginians and the Romans, and later, by the residence of the Portuguese governors between 1471 and 1661 then by that of the English governors between 1662 and 1684, before sheltering, from 1737 -1738, the famous palace of the sultan.

What is there to see at La Kasbah Museum?

The Museum is divided into three sections dealing with three different themes:

Section 1: Chronological journey

From one room to another, the visitor is led to travel from prehistoric times to Islamic times through Roman civilization.

Section 2: Trade

The rest of the route leads the visitor to discover a section dedicated to material traces providing information on the important commercial activities that operated between the Tingitan peninsula and other Mediterranean civilizations.

Section 3: Religion and funeral rites

The exhibition ends with a thematic focus on "Religion and funeral rites", thanks to several archaeological witnesses unearthed from the necropolises of the region.

"Open sky" section: Riad As-Sultan

In addition to the 3 aforementioned sections, the visitor will be able to visit the garden known as Riad As-Sultan of Arab-Andalusian type, which has a fountain.
